Show Summary

The framework of this spine tingler is unusual: a lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Anyone who sees her dies! The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre.

The History of The Woman in Black

Few ghost stories have enjoyed the remarkable theatrical legacy of The Woman in Black. What began as a modest Christmas production in a small English theatre became one of the longest-running plays in London's West End, terrifying audiences for more than three decades.

The story originated with Susan Hill's 1983 gothic horror novel, The Woman in Black. Inspired by the tradition of classic Victorian ghost stories, Hill crafted a chilling tale of isolation, grief, revenge, and the supernatural. Set against the bleak English countryside, the novel follows young solicitor Arthur Kipps as he travels to the remote Eel Marsh House, where he encounters a mysterious woman dressed in black and uncovers a terrifying history.

In 1987, playwright Stephen Mallatratt adapted Hill's novel for the stage at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, England. Originally conceived as a low-budget Christmas ghost story, the production premiered on December 12, 1987. Working with limited resources, Mallatratt devised an ingenious theatrical approach: just two principal actors, minimal scenery, and the audience's own imagination.

Rather than relying on elaborate sets or graphic horror, the play uses shadows, sound, suggestion, and carefully orchestrated moments of suspense to create an atmosphere of mounting dread. Its unusual play-within-a-play structure invites audiences to become participants in the unfolding nightmare, proving that what remains unseen can be far more frightening than what is revealed.

The production's success brought it to London in January 1989. Later that year, it settled into the Fortune Theatre in the West End, where it remained until March 4, 2023. Over its extraordinary 33-year London run, interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Woman in Black accumulated more than 13,000 performances and became the second-longest-running non-musical play in West End history, surpassed only by Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap.

The story also reached film audiences, most notably through the 2012 adaptation starring Daniel Radcliffe. Yet the stage production remains distinctive for its simplicity and its ability to transform an ordinary theatre into a place of genuine unease.

In February 2027, the Mikadow Theatre brings this celebrated ghost story to its historic stage under the direction of Gavin J. Annette. More than a century after the Mikadow first opened its doors, its darkened auditorium offers a fitting home for a theatrical experience built upon mystery, imagination, and the unsettling possibility that something may be watching from the shadows.

Some stories are meant to be told in the dark.
